Intro to Linear functions and equations

We are starting a new unit involving many important objectives based around linear equations and functions. You will learn how to find the slope of a line, use slope-intercept form, find the equation of a line, graph linear and quadratic functions, and how to use direct and inverse variation to solve problems.But for today, we are going to focus on using two variables in equations. First, click on this link:http://home.sprynet.com/~smyrl/EQ6.HTM Notice, they mention "explicit form," this is what we will refer to as slope-intercept form.

1.Next, read over pages 349 and 350 in your textbook. Then you can try a couple problems and post this on your blog. Do this by writing the equation for y in terms of x (ex. 3x + y = 7, so y = 7 -3x). Try #13-16 on pg. 351.

2.Next, read pg. 353 and 354 from your textbook. Define all bolded words (skip abscissa) in your notebook (or on your blog if you want to) from those pages using this website, http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/

13. 2x+y=6

y=6-2x

14. 5x+y=7

y=7-5x

15. 3x+2y=8

2y=8-3x

16.2x+5y=10

5y=10-2x

Definitions

Origin: the point of intersection of the x-axis and y-axis on a coordinate or Cartesian plane. the coordinates of the origin are (0,0).

x-axis: the horizontal axis of a graph

y-axis: the vertical axis of a graph

coordinate plane: a plane containing two perpendicular axes

coordinates: shown as pairs of letters and/or numbers. used to show position on a coordinate plane or map

x-coordinate: the position of a point according to the x-axis

y-coordinate: the position of a point according to the y-axis.

quadrants: any quarter of a plane divided by an x or y-axis

Have you seen gas prices lately???

One of your first posts were about filling your gas tank. Now, with the new gas price in the article, find how much it would cost to fill your tank. Find the difference between what you would have paid a month ago to now. One more thing - find me the lowest local gas price in Lake County!

When gas costed about 3.60 per gallon it took 108 dollars to fill my gas tank which is pretty expensive but know thatgas has reached 2.20 I could save a lot of my at the pump. If I were to fill up my gas tank today it would cost me 66.00!! That will save me 42.00 when I fill up my tank. The lowest gas price in lake county is 1.97.

I read the article on Gas prices dropping and I learned that the last time gas prices had a drop like this was in the 1980s and lasted for about 10 and 1/2 years!!! It is predicted that that will not happen but it would be pretty nice. I also learned that with the economy being the way it is, gas prices dropping may be the only thing putting money in consumer's pockets.

Poly What?

I understand polynomials and the video didn't really make anything about polynomials clearer to me. Somthing new that I learned from the website link was that polynomials cannot have the variable as a denominator in a fraction problem. Polynomials also cannot have a negative exponent. That is something new that I learned about polynomials.

Saving Money living in Cleveland

This will take you to a link that gives tips to saving money living in Cleveland. Take a couple minutes to read the titles of the articles and find TWO that interest you. After you read them, answer these questions on your blog in COMPLETE sentences for each article: 1) What article did you chose and why? 2) How does it relate to you? (if not you, your parents, your grandparents, your aunts, uncles, older siblings, etc.) 3) What did learn from reading this article? Be specific!

1.) The 1st article I chose to read about was 30 days 30 ways to save: shutting off water leaks. I chose to read this article because there are a couple places in our house that have water leaks.
2.) This relates to me and my family because we have some leaky faucets. Also, when we use the hose we leave it on until we are done using it. The same thing happens with the shower. The faucet will be turned off but the shower head will still drip.
3.) This article gave me a few tips that I could tell my family about. To stop the hose from constantly running when we use it we could get a nozzle for it. That way, when we're not spraying the hose all the water will be kept bottled up inside. One way to keep the shower head from leaking is to get a new one. It will definitely save you money in the long run.

1.) The 2nd article I chose to read about was 30 days 30 ways to save: back to school clothes shoppong. I chose to read this article because I love to shop for clothes and the more I save the more I can get.
2.) This relates to me and my family because with the way gas prices are we are always looking for ways to save money. If we shop at certain stores we can save money on brand name clothes that I love.
3.) From this article I learned that you can save money easily just by shopping at a different store. Plato's closet is a good place to go when looking to save money. They have awesome brand name clothes like Abercombie, Hollister, and American Eagle for prices half of what you can get at the mall.

Cost of Gas for an "average" American

1) Check out this article:http://www.bts.gov/publications/omnistats/volume_03_issue_04/html/entire.html2) Let's say you are an "average" American based on that article. How many total miles are spent driving to work in one week (remember you drive TO and FROM work each day)?3) Now, if you are like a typical American, you are doing more driving than just to work and back. In an average week, I drive around 350 miles per week! Use this equation, 350/mpg x P = T (mpg = whatever your car's mpg is, P = local gas price, T = total cost) to find out how much you will spend on gas in one week. Bonus - could you write an equation to find out how much you spend on gas in one month?

In one week the average american travels 15 miles one way to work and it takes on average 26 minutes. If I worked every day of the week I would travel 210 miles. In order to solve this problem I used an equation. If m=miles and d=days at work for that week than the equation is 15 x 2 x d= total miles traveled in one week. I plugged in the numbers and came up with 15 x 2 x 7=210. Next, to figure out how much money I would spend on gas I would again use an equation. Normally, I would drive abuot 350 miles a week total for other stuff not just work so I will use the equation 350/mpg x P = T when P=local gas price and T=total cost of gas for one week.
I will get the answer of 80.15. It will cost me 80 dollars and 15 cents for gas each week
